UPSC, CSE Exams Stages
UPSC, CSE Exams are conducted in three stages.
1. Preliminary Examination: The UPSC CSE consists of three stages: the Preliminary Examination or Civil Service Prelims is the first level of examination. It consists of two papers containing objective type questions.
a) GS Paper -1: this paper has 100 questions of 2 marks each. Negative marking for wrong answers is applied in both the papers. 1/3rd of the marks awarded for each question will cost the candidate for each wrong answer.
Questions asked in this paper are from important National and International Events, History, Economy, Geography, Polity, Science & Technology, Environment & Ecology. The marks scored in this paper/examination are not counted in the main examination.
On the basis of marks scored in this paper the list of candidates that would appear for the Civil Services Mains Examination is prepared.
b) CSAT Paper or Paper -2: this paper is consists of 80 questions from logical reasoning, reading comprehension, quantitative aptitude, etc. Aspirant or candidate must score 67 out of 200 marks i.e. 33% of the marks in this paper in order to qualify. Again these marks will not be counted for the final examination.
This is only a qualifying paper. The list of candidates will be prepared on the basis of marks scored in this paper that would be allowed to take up the next level of examination.
2. Civil Services Mains Examination: This is the second level of Examination. This examination consists of 9 papers with descriptive type questions. In these 9 papers again there are 2 language papers that are of qualifying nature.
The other 7 papers are Essay Paper, GS Paper-1, GS Paper-2, GS Paper-3, GS Paper-4, Optional Paper -1, and Optional Paper-2. Marks scored in these 7 papers will be taken for the purpose of determining whether or not the candidate will be summoned for the interview.
3.Civil Services Personality Test: The final level of examination is the Personality Test. Candidates those who have managed to qualify the mains examination and surpasses the cut off determined by the UPSC will be summoned for the interview.
After the interview or Personality Test, UPSC prepares the final merit list, considering the scores of the candidates in the mains examination and the personality test.
Then on the basis of their preferences, the merit list, as well as the category of the candidate and the vacancies in each category the candidates are allocated the services.
Are UPSC and IAS are
same?
